KHS to dedicate historic marker for NKY Heritage League May 12 at George Rogers Clark Park

On May 12 at 11 a.m. the Kentucky Historical Society will dedicate a historic marker on behalf of the Northern Kentucky Heritage League (NKHL) in celebration of its 50th Anniversary.

The dedication will start at 11 a.m. at George Rogers Clark Park at the park entrance on Garrard Street in Covington. The dedication is being held in conjunction with the Duveneck Memorial Art Show which starts at noon and is also held in the park.

Duvenek Memorial Art Show will follow after the marker dedication

Jim Jenkins, President of the NKHL said, “This is will be an incredible day for the Heritage League.  One of the founders, George Dreyer will be present at the dedication.  This marker is evidence that preserving our cultural and artistic heritage is important.”

Other local dignitaries have been invited to participate in the marker unveiling.

The NKHL was formed in 1967 by three friends — Ben Baker, George Dreyer and Luella LeVee — who met to discuss the beginning of a fine arts association for Northern Kentucky. Another purpose was to support the grassroots effort to establish a gallery for the exhibition of works by the famed Covington artist Frank Duveneck.

One of the Northern Kentucky Heritage League’s biggest accomplishments has been its involvement in the preservation of the houses on Riverside Drive and the north side of Second Street.

The Heritage League won the approval of Covington Commissioners to reconstruct and beautify George Rogers Clark Park. When the park was finished in the spring of 1969, the first Duveneck Art Show was held, which is now a local tradition.
