Turfway Park opens its 50th winter/spring meet Monday, Jan. 1, with live Thoroughbred racing scheduled New Year’s Day and all Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through March 31.
The winter/spring meet follows without interruption the holiday meet that closes Dec. 31.
Post time for the winter/spring meet continues at 6:15 p.m. ET with the exception of New Year’s Day and March 17, 24 and 31. Post time for those four dates is 1:10 p.m. ET.
The winter/spring meet offers nine stakes races, led by the Spiral Stakes (G3) and the Bourbonette Oaks (G3):50th
• Jan. 19: $50,000 Forego Stakes (black type), 4-year-olds and up, 6.5 furlongs
• Feb. 9: $50,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes (black type), 3-year-old fillies, 6.5 furlongs
• Feb. 23: $75,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes (black type), 3-year-olds, 8.5 furlongs
• March 17: $200,000 Spiral Stakes (G3), 3-year-olds, 9 furlongs
• March 17: $100,000 Bourbonette Oaks (G3), 3-year-old fillies, 8 furlongs
• March 17: $100,000 Kentucky Cup Classic (black type), 4-year-olds and up, 9 furlongs
• March 17: $75,000 Latonia Stakes (black type), 4-year-old and up fillies and mares, 8.5 furlongs (formerly the Wintergreen Stakes)
• March 17: $75,000 Rushaway (listed), 3-year-olds, 8.5 furlongs
• March 31: $50,000 WEBN Stakes (black type), 3-year-olds, 6.5 furlongs
The Spiral Stakes and Bourbonette Oaks continue as designated points races for the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1), respectively, each offering 34 points total with 20 to the winner.
“We’re looking forward to having the Kentucky Cup Classic back on the Turfway schedule,” said General Manager Daniel ‘Chip’ Bach. “Adding it and the Latonia Stakes to the Spiral Stakes card gives trainers more options and more reasons to ship to Turfway that day and the focus on stakes caliber horses will make the Spiral card more attractive to players.”
Scheduled events include new Latonia Days Celebration
A new event this year, called Latonia Days, celebrates the track’s long history and its inspiration, the original Latonia, which operated from 1883 to 1939 about 10 miles north of present-day Turfway. Scheduled for Feb. 23 and 24, Latonia Days will feature storytelling, memorabilia displays provided by track historian Dr. Jim Claypool, and screenings of Sporting Blood, a 1931 movie starring Clark Gable that was filmed partly at Old Latonia, and the documentary Old Latonia: America’s Most Beautiful Race Course, by Cam Miller Films.
Turfway’s popular Dollar Fridays continue through the meet, with draft beer, hot dogs, soda and win, place and show bets available for a dollar each and live music from local cover bands.
With the exception of Spiral Stakes day, admission to Turfway is free. Parking is free every day.
