The Covington Police Department has released updated information about the officer that was injured early Sunday morning in an incident on Madison Avenue.

We have received many inquiries about the identity of the Good Samaritan who assisted our officer as well as the identity and condition of the officer in question. We thank everyone in the community for their concern
The officer who was injured is Officer Brian Powers. He has been a Covington Police Officer since August of 2016 and before that he was an officer in the City of Dayton Kentucky. Officer Powers’ condition is that he is at home with his family recovering from his injuries. We have no other information to offer regarding the specific injuries he suffered other than that they are serious.
After receiving permission from our Good Samaritan to release his identity, it is our pleasure to publicly thank:
Staff Sergeant Stewart A. Lee of the United States Army
Staff Sergeant Lee is an Army Medic currently stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He was home for the holidays and thankfully was in the right place when this event happened.
We have no photos of Staff Sergeant Lee to offer.
The original statement issued by the Covington Police Department:
On December 24, 2017 at approximately 0125 Hrs, Officers of the Covington Police Department made contact with Antonio Ford, M/B, 33yrs, of Newport, KY, in the 900 Block of Madison Avenue.
Ford
Ford was known by both the officers to have an active warrant for Assault 4th Degree, charges signed on him by this agency for an unrelated case. While the officers were attempting to arrest Ford, Ford attempted to flee from the officers and assaulted an officer during the process.
The officer who was assaulted suffered serious injuries but he is in stable condition and is expected to fully recover. The injured officer will not be identified at this time.
In addition to the active warrant for Assault 4th Degree, Mr. Ford has also been charged with:
Assault 3rd Degree of a Police Officer, a felony
Fleeing and Evading 1st Degree, a felony
Resisting Arrest, a misdemeanor
Ford was lodged in the Kenton County Detention Center
