Covington Police officer seriously injured in attempt to apprehend suspect on Madison Avenue overnight

A Covington Police officer was seriously injured while attempting to apprehend a man with an outstanding warrant in the 900 block of Madison Avenue overnight.

The officer, whose name has not been released, suffered serious injuries when the suspect, identified as Antonio Ford, of Newport, attempted to avoid capture. The nature of the officer’s injuries has not been revealed.

Ford was apprehended and taken into custody.

The Covington Police Department issued the following statement regarding the incident:

On December 24, 2017 at approximately 0125 Hrs, Officers of the Covington Police Department made contact with Antonio Ford, M/B, 33yrs, of Newport, KY, in the 900 Block of Madison Avenue.

Ford was known by both the officers to have an active warrant for Assault 4th Degree, charges signed on him by this agency for an unrelated case. While the officers were attempting to arrest Ford, Ford attempted to flee from the officers and assaulted an officer during the process.

The officer who was assaulted suffered serious injuries but he is in stable condition and is expected to fully recover. The injured officer will not be identified at this time.

In addition to the active warrant for Assault 4th Degree, Mr. Ford has also been charged with:
Assault 3rd Degree of a Police Officer, a felony
Fleeing and Evading 1st Degree, a felony
Resisting Arrest, a misdemeanor

Ford was lodged in the Kenton County Detention Center
