On Scam Awareness Day: Duke Energy joins forces to shut down scammers, protect customers

Today is the second annual Utility Scam Awareness Day. Throughout this week, utilities across the country are joining forces to arm customers with the knowledge to spot scams and protect their information.

While Duke Energy customers have become 50 percent less susceptible to scams since the formation of Utilities United Against Scams in 2016, scams continue to evolve and increase.

In fact, utility scams grew more than 100 percent last year with scammers using a variety of phone, email and in-person tactics to target customers and steal money.

Three of the most common scams are a threat to disconnect service, a request for immediate payment and a request for prepaid debit card information.

Duke Energy never asks or requires a customer with a delinquent account to purchase a prepaid debit card to avoid disconnection, and customers with delinquent accounts receive an advance disconnection notification from Duke Energy with the regular monthly billing – never a single notification quickly before disconnection.

Duke Energy encourages customers who suspect a scam to hang up and call Duke Energy immediately at the phone number listed on your bill, followed by a call to the police.

Review the attached fact sheet and visit duke-energy.com/StopScams for more information. By knowing what to look for and asking questions, consumers can help shut down scammers.
