Don Owen: Brossart’s Trentman plays key role at Christian Brothers; Schreck, Schuh shine

Christian Brothers University is located in Memphis, Tenn., but sports fans would never guess that based on the school’s men’s basketball roster.

Given that eight of the 15 players are from the Greater Cincinnati area, many people would probably assume Christian Brothers is extremely close to Northern Kentucky. But the school is in Memphis, where head coach Mike Nienaber has established a pipeline of talented basketball players from the Greater Cincinnati region since taking the job in 1999.

CBU’s Alex Trentman

That pipeline includes former Bishop Brossart High School standout Alex Trentman, a 6-foot-6 forward who has helped Christian Brothers jump out to a 5-0 start and earn a No. 10 ranking in the Division II poll.

“His numbers speak for themselves, and Alex is a great team guy whose personality reflects the relaxed, confident attitude our team is playing with,” said Nienaber, a Cincinnati native who has been on the Christian Brothers sidelines for 18 years and owns 316 career victories. “Alex has a real knack for rebounding that one would not expect when you look at his overall size. He has added strength during the past offseason that has enhanced his overall game.”

Trentman currently averages 9.6 points per game, is shooting 55.9 percent from the field, and pulls down 7.0 rebounds per game. He scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds on Nov. 12 as CBU posted an 87-78 victory in Memphis.

During a 77-74 win at Trevecca Nazarene on Nov. 18, Trentman netted 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field and hauled in eight rebounds.

A year ago, Trentman scored in double figures 13 times. He poured in a career-high 24 points against Alabama-Huntsville on Feb. 23, 2017.

“He has consistently done his job for two years now, and Alex is critical to our team’s continued success,” Nienaber said.

As a senior year at Brossart, Trentman averaged 19.6 points per game and 8.1 rebounds. He led the Mustangs to a 23-5 record and a district runner-up finish. A two-time All-10th Region performer, Trentman set five school records and finished 11th in career scoring with 1,137 points.

SCHRECK SHINES FOR CAPITAL: Former Dixie Heights High School standout Austin Schreck is averaging 14.0 points per game for Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.

CU’s Austin Schreck

Schreck, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, also averages 4.8 rebounds and has made 58.3 percent of his attempts from the field. He is also shooting 86.7 percent from the free-throw line and scored 25 points against Wittenberg on Nov. 21.

As a senior at Dixie Heights, Schreck averaged 11.4 points per game and led the team in rebounding at 5.1 boards per contest. He was also the cornerstone for the Dixie Heights defense, which limited opponents to less than 50 points per game that season.

Schreck is also an academic scholar at Capital, which competes at the NCAA Division III level in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

TRANSY’S SCHUH EXCELS: Transylvania University features Covington Catholic graduate Bo Schuh, who is shooting 52.6 percent from the field and averages 9.0 points per game.

TU’s Bo Schuh

A 6-foot-6 junior forward, Schuh scored 13 points during an 88-72 win at Thomas More on Saturday night. Transylvania is 3-0 and averages 102.3 points per game.

Schuh was a starting forward on CovCath’s 2014 state championship basketball team. The Ft. Mitchell native also helped the Colonels advance to the semifinals of the state tournament in 2015 before losing to eventual champion Owensboro. During his three seasons as a varsity starter, the Colonels had a 91-15 record.

Schuh finished his CovCath career with 1,089 points and 677 rebounds. In his senior season, he averaged 13.1 points and 7.3 rebounds and was named to the 9th Region all-star team.
