EKU CRUISES TO WIN: THE Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team coasted to a 99-71 victory over Asbury on Saturday night at McBrayer Arena in Richmond.

EKU’s Peyton Broughton

Peyton Broughton led four Colonels in double figures with a career-high 21 points, 16 of which came in the second half. He also added five rebounds and a block.
Dedric Boyd finished with his first career double-double, pouring in 17 points and dishing out 12 assists. His six rebounds left him four boards shy of a triple-double. Boyd’s 12 assists are the most by an EKU player in a game since 2015.

EKU outrebounded Asbury, 56-36, and outscored the Eagles in the paint, 50-12. The Colonels shot 44.7 percent (34-of-76) from the field and 28 percent (7-of-25) from 3-point range. EKU also converted 24-of-27 (89 percent) of its free throws.

EKU returns to action on Wednesday when the Colonels travel to Bowling Green to face in-state rival Western Kentucky. Tip from Diddle Arena is scheduled for 8 p.m.

MOREHEAD STATE LOSES ON ROAD: Djimon Henson poured in a season-high 17 points Saturday, but the Morehead State men’s basketball team dropped a 96-63 decision to Virginia Tech at Blacksburg, Va.

Henson was 8-of-13 from the field and also added four assists for the Eagles (1-4). Virginia Tech (5-1), which leads the nation in field goal percentage, raced out to an 8-0 lead and was never threatened.

“For our young team, we just have to learn to come out with more of a sense of urgency,” said Morehead State head coach Preston Spadlin. “I really feel like in the second half we were much more aggressive, we started driving the ball more, we started setting screens and we got to the foul line more with our inside-out game. So, we did some encouraging things.”

Morehead State trailed 51-23 at the half. Virginia Tech finished at 57 percent (31-of-54) shooting from the field for the game and placed four players in double figures. The Hokies also made 10 three-pointers.

Morehead State visits Northern Kentucky University this Saturday at 7 p.m. in BB&T Arena.
