The Carnegie is preparing to open its 2017-18 Gallery Season with four exhibitions and debut its new gallery format on Friday, September 15.
The Other Thing will run in the Ohio National Financial Services Main Gallery, and Text & subtext & big deal will run in the Hutson Gallery from September 15 – November 19. Opening at the same time will be two season-long exhibitions in the upstairs galleries. The opening reception will run from 5-8 p.m. and begin with a gallery talk at 6 p.m. with participants, led by Carnegie Exhibitions Director Matt Distel

The Other Thing will open downstairs in the Ohio National Financial Services Main Gallery, and will run through November 19. Organized with painter Michael Stillion, the show highlights artists that are bending disciplines and moving between sculpture, drawing, painting, film/video, and all seeking to upend expectations and subvert how artistic media behave. Exhibiting artists include Heather Braunlin-Jones, Skip Cullen, Nick Fagan, Sean Foley, Alicia Little, Alice Pixley Young, Joey Versoza; video program curated by The Mini Microcinema.
Upstairs, Text & subtext & big deal will run in the Hutson Gallery from September 15 – November 19. Visual artist Diana Duncan Holmes and the late poet Timothy Riordan created text and photo-based art both individually and collaboratively. Text & subtext & big deal documents the last collaboration before Riordan’s death in 2015. Based on Riordan’s poem simulacrum, Duncan Holmes, Wendy Collin Sorin, and Casey Riordan Millard reimagined and rearranged the 60-page poem into 120 artworks and an audio recording accompanied by a reading of the poem.
“The 2017-18 season opens with four exciting and diverse shows. The exhibiting artists are a cross-section of some of the most compelling artists in this region and beyond,” said Distel. “The Carnegie is attempting some new formats and testing how all of the galleries fit together and can be used to create new connections.”
Nick Fagan: Come Home
New this year, two season-long exhibitions will be on display in three of the upstairs galleries September 15, 2017 – July 1, 2018. The Installation Gallery will host Andrey Kozakov: Trading Room. The Cincinnati-based, Ukranian-born artist will create a fantastical, interactive environment in secret rooms that expand into more rooms and compartments that hold curios and surprises.
Meanwhile, the Duveneck and Reiveschl Galleries will host My Arms are Like Joy Joy Joy! curated by visiting artist Derek Franklin. The Portland-based curator structured the exhibition on a series of studio visits with artists from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The show will examine prevailing themes that emerged from those visits combined with work from artists he has selected from outside the region. Exhibiting artists include: Amanda Curreri (Cincinnati), Rob Halverson (Portland/ LA), Kristan Kennedy (Portland), Ramondo Love (Cincinnati), Lydia Rosenberg (Cincinnati), Jason Carey Sheppard (New York), Sayak Shome (Cincinnati), Rebecca Steele (Cincinnati), Emily Weiner (New York).
The opening reception for the four exhibitions is free to attend and includes light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. After opening night works will be available for viewing through November 19 during regular gallery hours, Wednesday – Saturday noon-5 p.m.
