On Wednesday, Feb. 15, the Department of Juvenile Justice will begin accepting applications for the Title II Formula Grants Program, which supports initiatives to keep low-level juvenile offenders out of the criminal justice system.
Approximately $300,000 will be available through the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in the U.S. Department of Justice. Individual grants of up to $100,000 may be awarded.
These funds will be used to support collaborative, community-based delinquency prevention efforts that are designed to keep at-risk youth and first-time, non-serious offenders from entering the juvenile justice system. That includes efforts to reduce incarceration of low-level public and status offenders and to expand prevention programs.
The funds have been earmarked for public and private non-profit organizations and for city or county governments that provide direct service programs for youth ages 10 to 14. They are administered through sub-grants to units of local government and/or non-profit organizations.
Funds will not be awarded to cover the cost of equipment, rent, building costs, travel, training or existing staff salaries.
Activities can include programs or other initiatives directed to youth at risk of becoming delinquent to prevent them from entering the juvenile justice system or to intervene with first-time and non-serious offenders to keep them out of the juvenile justice system.
Priority will be given to applications that utilize evidence-based programming and/or practices, or programs that show promising results. Awarded applicants must provide outcome data to the awarding agency throughout the duration of the grant. Grant funding is reimbursement based and an in-kind match of 25 percent is required.
