Newport Business Association throws annual meeting celebration; gives awards, installs officers


The Newport Business Association knows how to throw an annual meeting and awards presentation.

And the celebration was full on last night as pianist Ricky Nye and Newport’s own “Blues Brothers” Mayor Jerry Peluso, Commissioner Tom Guidugli Jr, Police Chief Tom Collins, Fred Collins, Tony Painter and Brian Williams provided the entertainment.

Before turning entertainer, Mayor Peluso presented the 2015 Officers and Board of Directors and administered an oath to the following officers and directors:

The NBA presented the following awards:

Community Leadership 2014 Fire/EMS Chief Gary Auffart

Auffart received the leadership award for his work in beautifying Buena Vista Park, partnering with Red Cross to install 300 smoke detectors for Westside residents, assisting Brighton Center in the Quality of Life Process, participating in Big Brother and Big Sister to mentor a child in need, and assisting Newport residents in ongoing neighborhood projects.

Volunteer of the Year 2014 – Sherri and Don Spaulding

The Spauldings were recognized for contributing many volunteers hours for the Clifton Neighborhood and helping revitalize greenspaces and recreational areas of Newspsort. Among many other activities, they assisted with the planting of 90-plus trees in the East Row Historic Neighborhood and have been faithful supporters of the Monmouth Street Farmers Market.

Business of the Year 2014 – Capital Investment Group, Inc. & Newport on the Levee (combination award)

Capital Investment Group and partners Dvid Bastos and Gregg Fusaro operate Southshore Condominiums and developed Bue 180 apartments on Riverboat Row; Newport of the Levee, part of the Price Group Organization of LaJolla, CA., operates a major entertainment center for the region. The groups have joined together with Musselman Hotels of Louisville to construct a major hotel/apartment/retail center on Newport’s riverfront.

New Business of the Year

2014 – Carabello Coffee – Emily & Justin Carabello

The Carabellos opened the coffee shop — a philanthropic artisan coffee roasting company — on East 9th Street in 2013 and are already expanding their business. Their recent Kickstarter campaign raised over $40,000.

Long Standing Service 2014 – “Marvin” Award – Walter J. (Wally) Pagan

Wally Pagan, founding president of Southbank Partners, has long been involved in local and regional affairs. He continues to manage all facets of the Purple People Bridge and is a tireless cheerleader and advocate for the community good.

Recognition Award – Robert Horine, Campbell County Administrator

A special recognition was given to Robert Horine who is retiring after 13 years as Campbell County administrator.
