HealthPoint Family Care lowers rates to make services more affordable for uninsured patients

Many uninsured patients are now paying less for medical and dental office visits at HealthPoint Family Care, a nonprofit primary care practice in Northern Kentucky.

HealthPoint has adjusted its sliding fee scale, which is based on federal poverty guidelines for income and household size. HealthPoint offers discounted services to patients who do not have health insurance and cannot afford to pay full fee for services, or whose insurance does not cover certain services or leaves a balance due to the patients.

Previously, HealthPoint charged office visit fees of $30 or $40 to uninsured patients whose household income was below 200% of the federal poverty level.

The new fee structure ranges from a minimum $20 to a maximum $33 for a basic medical visit. For example, an uninsured patient from a 2-person household with income of $15,730 pays $20 for a basic medical office visit. If the household income increases to $31,460, the medical visit fee is $33.

Basic dental visit fees also were revised, and now range from $28 to $40 for an exam with x-rays, according to the uninsured patient’s household income.

“We are pleased to be able to reduce co-pays by 33% for basic medical visits, to help eliminate the barrier of cost to those seeking primary care. We have rolled back these fees to 2007 levels,” said Christopher M. Goddard, chief executive officer of HealthPoint Family Care. “Our goal is to increase access to health and dental care for all Northern Kentuckians.”

Nearly 6,900 patients, or 22% of HealthPoint’s 31,800 patients, had no health insurance last year.

When patients qualify for the sliding scale discount program, HealthPoint can assist them with enrollment in Medicaid and Affordable Care Act Marketplace health insurance plans. The number of HealthPoint patients with Medicaid coverage has increased since Kentucky expanded eligibility for Medicaid to adults with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level.

HealthPoint provides an array of services, including adult medicine, pediatric medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, behavioral health, substance abuse and dentistry. The practice has 39 physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners and other clinical providers who treat patients at several locations in Covington, Latonia, Bellevue, Florence, and Nicholasville, Ky., including school-based health and dental centers in five Northern Kentucky school districts.

That wasn’t my experience with them.. I had a charge of $54 for dental, visit ex-rays and made to return for cleaning in 6 weeks for another $24.00 then also received a $9.00 bill in the mail for what insurance doesn’t cover.. I don’t have dental insurance which is why I went in there in the first place. and I have never had to make two visits for a cleaning. and I have had 100’s of dental visits in the past, many at dental clinics in Cinti.. When I complained they told me I could pick up my dental ex rays after my cleaning and go elsewhere. That really doesn’t work for me. And they would change their procedure, to make their staff inform patients that their dental cleaning will be in two visits. not one.. like the rest of the world does it.
    Go figure!! Disappointing KY..
