“I am humbled and honored to be recognized by a university that holds such a special place in my and my family’s heart,” Armstrong said. “Mercyhurst’s motto is carpe diem, seize the day. I believe my experience at Mercyhurst, as a small value-based liberal arts institution instilled in me a commitment to excellence as well as an attitude to appreciate every opportunity that comes one’s way. “

Armstrong became the 14th president of Thomas More College in July 2013. He has led the institution through a transformation that includes the introduction of new academic programs, and co-curricular and extra-curricular initiatives.

Under his leadership, the college has embarked upon a growth initiative resulting in consistent student body growth for each enrollment period since his arrival. In the 2014-2015 academic year, the college welcomed one of the largest classes of incoming students ever and the greatest number of students living in the residence halls.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Armstrong holds a juris doctor from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (1989) and a bachelor of arts in political science, minor in accounting, from Mercyhurst University (1986). Previously, he served as vice president and general counsel of Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio, for 10 years where he oversaw divisions of the college that set records in enrollment and fundraising.

His background in higher education administration at Notre Dame College, Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania, and Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, includes a span of experience in development, student life, recruitment, higher education law and policy, and athletics.

Armstrong will receive the award from Mercyhurst on the campus on Saturday, June 13.
