Bring a blanket: It’s outdoor movie time in Covington; film showings throughout the summer

The smell of freshly popped popcorn and a sea of picnic blankets can mean only one thing: The beginning of outdoor movie season.

More than 1,500 watched the movie “Hocus Pocus” at Linden Grove Cemetery last October as part of “Cinema in the Cemetery.”

Families will have seven opportunities to catch free kid-friendly outdoor movies in three different locations this year, all beginning at dusk. Movie goers will receive free popcorn and options to buy concessions at a minimal cost. Carpooling is recommended.

Devou Summer Movie Series: Movies return to the park the last Friday of each month, beginning Friday. The series is sponsored by the Devou Good Project and CORA, the Cincinnati Off-Road Alliance.

“We’re excited to have the movies back in Devou, and the bandshell offers a perfect setting for families to make memories and enjoy natural greenspaces close to home,” said Covington Recreation Program Coordinator Erin Smiley.

Cinema in the Cemetery: The City is partnering with three groups – Friends of Peaselburg, Linden Grove Cemetery & Arboretum and the Center for Great Neighborhoods – to show movies in Linden Grove. Last year, more than 1,500 people came out in October to see a spooky Halloween-edition showing of Hocus Pocus.

“Some people think cemeteries are creepy, but whether you’re watching a movie or doing yoga, the beautiful, park-like setting of Linden Grove is an amazing place to enjoy the summer months while celebrating the history of our amazing community,” said Lisa Jarboe, a Peaselburg community member and founder of Cinema in the Cemetery.
