Kentuckians for Commonwealth to hold public vigil today at McConnell’s office on immigration

Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, working with Northern Kentucky Justice and Peace Committee and others, will hold a public vigil Senator Mitch McConnell’s Northern Kentucky office tonight.

The office is located at 1885 Dixie Highway in Fort Mitchell and will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday June 21st.

President Trump issued a statement ending the declared policy of separating families at the border.

Kentuckians for the Commonwealth issued this statement:

“However, this action fails to address several issues: 2300 children have been separated from their families since the ‘no tolerance’ policy, and he has stated the no tolerance policy still stands.

“In addition, leaders in Congress, including our own Senator Mitch McConnell, still have not moved to permanently protect DACA recipients or other DREAM eligible residents; Congress refuses to seriously consider passing just and comprehensive immigration reform. And ICE continues to threaten immigrants and their families here in our community.

It is clear Congress must fix our broken immigration system in a way that protects migrants’ inherent humanity and dignity. To make our vision a reality Kentuckians must hold elected officials accountable.  Join us on Thursday, June 21st, to show solidarity with those left behind by our cruel and broken system and send a clear message that families belong together.”

Yesterday, Sen. McConnel joined with colleagues to introduce the Keep Families Together and Enforce the Law Act.

The legislation requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to keep families together pending the outcome of their immigration proceedings. It also authorizes more immigration court judges to prioritize adjudication of family cases. In addition, it protects children who are at risk of harm and sets standards of care for family residential centers to ensure immigrant families are treated humanely and fairly.

“I support keeping families together while their immigration status is determined. This legislation does just that by addressing the issue in a timely manner and halts the separation of children from their families during this process,” said Senator McConnell.
