Purple People Bridge all decked out for Christmas Walk — Tree of Lights, decorations, music, activities

For the first time in its 145-year history, the Purple People Bridge will be decked out with lights, decorations, and music during the month of December as part of the bridge’s inaugural Christmas Walk.

Newport Vice Mayor Tommy Guidugli and his daughter, Giabella, 5, turned on the lights

Giabella Guidugli, the five-year-old daughter of Newport Vice-Mayor Tommy Guidugli, flipped on a switch to turn on a Tree of Lights and other holiday lights lining the half-mile bridge to commence the opening of the Christmas walk Friday at 6 p.m.

Until Jan. 1, the public is invited to enjoy the Purple People Bridge Christmas Walk, which features a Tree of Lights in the middle of the bridge, 1,000 white-and-purple lights strung across the bridge, projected lighting, seasonal music, wreaths, and scenic views of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky from high above the Ohio River.

“It’s been an exciting year for the Purple People Bridge,” said Jack Moreland, president of the Newport Southbank Bridge Company.

“And we couldn’t think of a better way to cap off the end of the year than by inviting families to celebrate the holiday season by enjoying a Christmas Walk on the Purple People Bridge.”

The Newport Southbank Bridge Company, which owns and operates the bridge, recently outfitted the entire length of bridge with a speaker system that will provide Christmas music during the Christmas Walk and music for other events held on the bridge. The Christmas Walk is a joint effort of the Bridge Company and ColdIron Enterprises Inc.

During the 2017, the Purple People Bridge introduced a number of new events and features on the bridge, including “Party on the Purple” each Wednesday night during the summer, the “Boom on the Bridge” Labor Day fireworks party, the new Ohio-Kentucky state border feature, and now, the bridge’s new Christmas Walk.

The Southbank Bridge Company is currently conducting a capital campaign to raise more than $1 million to repaint the bridge and maintain the historic structure.
