Head Coach John Brannen announces a pair of highly-accomplished scoring guards in Trevon Faulkner and Bryant Mocaby have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball team.
“I can’t tell you how excited we are to announce the signings of Trevon and Bryant,” said Brannen. “Coach Shumate, Coach Dwyer and Coach Morris did an outstanding job of targeting and developing relationships with young men that not only provided a need, but more importantly, exemplify the core values of our program. Our goal is to continue to build a championship caliber program developed through great recruiting classes.”
A Harrodsburg product, Faulkner has proven to be an elite scorer during his prep career at Mercer County, setting the program’s career scoring record as just a junior with 2,162 points. He was named all-state by both the Courier Journal and Lexington Herald as a sophomore and junior after averaging 18 points per game and 24 ppg, respectively. 247Sports.com lists Faulkner as a three-star recruit, making him the fifth 3-star recruit to sign with the Norse in the last three years, joining Carson Williams, Dantez Walton, Mason Faulkner and Chris Vogt.
Faulkner is a two-sport star in high school, as the talented cornerback has received all-state accolades and has been ranked in the top-50 prospects in the state on the gridiron as well.
“Trevon provides a physicality and toughness from the guard position that will translate well to our league,” stated Brannen. “He plays hard on every possession and loves to compete. He really is a perfect fit for our style of play.”
Mocaby is a wing from Derby, Kansas, a suburb of Wichita. In his three years of playing prep hoops at Goddard High School, the elite three-point shooter has racked up more than 1,200 career points, including an average of 18.2 points per game as a junior. Mocaby excelled this summer for Kansas Pray N’ Play and now attends Derby High School.
Similar to Faulkner, Mocaby has been a standout on the football field, helping Goddard reach the state championship game as a junior.
“Bryant is a 6-foot-5 knock down shooter,” exclaimed Brannen. “Our fans will think of Cole Murray when watching Bryant play. What stood out to our staff was his toughness, size and shot-making.”
The Norse are set to open the 2017-18 campaign this Friday when the team welcomes fellow NCAA tournament team East Tennessee State to BB&T Arena for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Prior to the start of the game, Northern Kentucky will unveil its 2017 Horizon League Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance banners.
