Thomas More College launches Homecoming Week with tonight’s new UFest; big gathering Friday


Thomas More College will launch its Homecoming Week celebration this Wednesday with a new event, U(topia) Fest, a family-friendly music festival.

Free and open to the public, the U(topia) Fest will be held from 5-10 p.m. on TMC’s campus. It will boast several food trucks, a KidZone, and music from the college’s marching band as well as from a DJ and the local band, Friday Giants. To add to the spirited evening, a color release will occur during the Friday Giants’ performance.

On Friday, the college will host a gathering for the classes of 2012, 2007, 1992, and 1967 who will be marking their five, ten, twenty-five, and fifty-year reunions.

Saturday at noon, the Saints will host the Westminster Titans. Thomas More is 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in the President’s Athletic Conference after a setback last week at Carnegie Mellon University.  The Titans enter the game at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the PAC after defeating Bethany College last Saturday.

The Thomas More rushing attack is one of the tops in NCAA Division III. It is ranked No. 15 in the nation as it averages 287.0 yards after the first four weeks of the season.

Junior running back Hjavier Pitts (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Healthy) is the fifth-leading rusher among Division III.  He has carried the ball 90 times for 590 yards and six touchdowns. Thomas More ranks No. 31 in red zone offense among Division III teams. 

The Saints are 15-for-16 when in the red zone as they have scored 52 points, including eight touchdowns. This is the 16th all-time meeting on the gridiron between Thomas More and Westminster and Thomas More has a 14-1 advantage.  The Saints have won the last 12 meetings, including a 45-35 win last season in New Wilmington Pennsylvania.

All college alumni are invited to the Saints Zone Alumni Tent to enjoy all-day food and beverages for a nominal fee.

The Homecoming Court will be introduced at half-time of the football game. There will also be a half-time performance by the college’s band, the Marching Saints, and the Dance Team. The 100-plus member band will perform “Rock through the Ages”; hit music from the ‘70’s through today.

Following football, the TMC men’s rugby team takes on Western Kentucky University at 4:00 P.M. on BB&T Field.

The events on campus will conclude with The 2017 Alumni Awards ceremony begins with a cocktail reception beginning at 4:00 p.m. and programming beginning at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, September 30 in Steigerwald Hall in the Saints Center of Thomas More College, 333 Thomas More Parkway, Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

The Professional Achievement Award  – Awarded to an alumnus/a whose career has reached a level of excellence in his or her respective field of endeavor, and is recognized as such by peers and other knowledgeable contacts.

Tim Rahschulte – Class of 1993
Dave Schroeder – Class of 1990

The Citizenship Award  – Awarded to an alumnus/a  who has made a significant impact on the welfare of his or her community through service and leadership. Nominees should exhibit a strong commitment to integrity, concern for justice, and service to others for which our spiritual patron and namesake, St. Thomas More, is so justly renowned.

Bob Ryan – Class of 1970
Tom Saalfeld – Class of 1971

The Thomas More College Service Award  – Awarded to an alumnus/a  or friend of Thomas More College who has provided continued service to the College. This award recognizes extraordinary service in terms of time, energy and expertise rather than financial support.

Terry Egan – Class of 1971

The Lasting Influence Award  – Awarded to a faculty or staff member, past or present, who has provided a positive and lasting impact on the lives of students. Nominees should be noted as a role model for the College’s mission and one who also served as an influence in the career choice of the students they served.
