Newport HS one of 24 schools in KY recognized for high achievement in attaining career readiness

Newport High School is one of just 24 schools in Kentucky that have been recognized for its students’ high achievement in attaining Career Readiness by the Kentucky Association for Career and Technical Education (KACTE).

Newport High School was honored under criteria established last year by the Kentucky Office of Career and Technical Education for the number of graduates who reached Career Readiness and who were enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

The school received the Career Readiness Gold Award for meeting the following criteria:

  • A top 40 school in Kentucky in completion percentage and preparatory percentage
  • 55 percent of graduates in Career Readiness status
  • 80 percent of graduates enrolled in Career and Technical Education.

“Our main job as educators is to prepare our kids for their futures,” said Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Kelly Middleton. “Career Readiness is important because we know that our graduates are prepared for the careers, jobs and opportunities that await them in the future. We are grateful and humbled by this award and are honored to be recognized for our education excellence.”

Middleton and Newport High School Teacher Jenna Koroly accepted the award recently on behalf of the school and the school district.

Data released last year by the Kentucky Department of Education confirms the Newport Schools’ success in preparing graduates for career readiness. Newport High School’s college-career readiness vaulted from 42.3 percent in 2012-13 to 75.5 percent in 2015-16.

“So much of the credit goes to our teachers,” Middleton said. “They focus on building relationships with our kids, going out and meeting the parents and students in their homes and neighborhoods, and getting to know everything they can about their students. Combined with the time and attention we give to professional development and strong hires in the classrooms, we are making a difference.”

KACTE is the only professional association in Kentucky whose mission is to support all Career and Technical Education programs both statewide and with the federal government.
