ACE Hardware presents check to Master Provisions, proceeds of fundraising campaign, to fight hunger

ACE Hardware in Independence presented Master Provisions with a check for $2190, the proceeds of their April Point-of-Sale fundraising campaign to fight hunger in Northern Kentucky.

ACE Hardware owner Bill Winegardner delivered the check to the staff at Master Provisions’ Florence facility.

Throughout April, ACE customers were given the opportunity to add a donation to their payment as they checked out. Customers learned about Master Provisions food outreach program in Northern Kentucky through displays in the store, located on Declaration Drive in Independence.

“Our customers have been great supporters of this point-of-sale campaign,” said Winegardner. “They know the money they donate will provide help to hungry families in our own community.”

Since beginning its food outreach in late 2012, Master Provisions has distributed over 12 million pounds of food to area nonprofits who feed the hungry. These include soup kitchens, shelters, and weekend food packs for school children. Master Provisions also provides food and logistical support for two mobile food pantries, serving hungry families in Covington and Ludlow on the last Saturday of each month.

“Each dollar donated at the ACE checkout helped us provide food for 10 meals,” said Master Provisions president Roger Babik.  “The staff and customers of ACE Hardware have been generous partners in meeting the needs of hungry people here in Northern Kentucky.”

Babik explained that Master Provisions works with local food wholesalers who donate large quantities of surplus fresh food. Master Provisions safely stores that food at its facility and then distributes it to partner agencies that already have established programs for hunger relief.  Most of the surplus is fresh fruits, vegetables, baked and dairy products, as well as frozen entrees.

“This approach prevents surplus food from going to waste, “Babik said. “It also means that our partner agencies can focus on feeding people, rather than using their resources to obtain food. And, because the food is fresh, they’re able to provide more nutritious meals.”
