Alvin L. Garrison will continue his work as superintendent of Covington Independent Public Schools for at least 4 more years.
The Covington Board of Education Thursday night approved a new 4-year contract that will extend his services through June 2021.

Garrison’s salary will be $140,000, an increase of $11,000.
Board Chairman Julie Geisen Scheper said the district is making progress under Garrison’s leadership. She noted that the district has schools that are distinguished and proficient. The district recently purchased laptops for all students at Holmes High School, she said.
“We are renovating our athletic field and making energy improvements in all of our buildings to enhance the learning environment,’’ Geisen Scheper said. “We want to keep these successes moving forward, and we believe Superintendent Garrison is leading us in the right direction.’’
Garrison, who was first hired nearly four years ago, said he is overjoyed to continue his work in Covington schools.
“We have great students, faculty and staff, great families and a great community here,’’ he said. “We are making strides in the right direction, but we know we have much work to do.”
Garrison said he wants to continue to build a positive culture that supports student achievement in addition to establishing teams of educators who will teach and prepare students for the 21st century.
“Our kids have unlimited potential and we just want to make sure that they reach whatever goals they set for their future,’’ he said. “We want to continue to guide our students to dream, achieve and succeed.’’
