The local players will be on the roster for the Kentucky state team that will take on the top players from Louisville in the 2 p.m. all-star game for seniors. The state team won last year’s game, but Louisville has a 4-2 lead in the series.

Morgan was recruited by Western Michigan University because of his passing skills. This season, he has thrown for 2,376 yards and 22 touchdowns for the Raiders, who have an 11-0 record going into the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Last week, Morgan became the 10th Kentucky high school quarterback to surpass the 10,000 mark in career passing yards during his team’s 47-3 win over Lexington Henry Clay.

The other local players named to the statewide all-star team are linebackers Brian Carter of Simon Kenton and Owen Finke of Holy Cross, defensive lineman Chase Ross of Ryle and defensive back Date Hendrix of Cooper.

There’s a good chance Hendrix will also play some wide receiver in the all-star game. The Indiana State University recruit has more than 1,400 yards in pass receptions over the last two seasons.

Basketball scrimmage games to raise money for scholarship fund

Two of the new head coaches in Northern Kentucky boys’ high school basketball will make their unofficial debuts Saturday, Nov. 19 in pre-season scrimmage games at Simon Kenton High School that raise money for the Kelsey Sorrell Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Sorrell, a graduate of Notre Dame Academy, died in an automobile accident in January of 2008. Her parents established a scholarship fund at the school in her honor.

The last two games on the scrimmage schedule are Scott vs. Cincinnati Taylor at 3 p.m. and Conner vs. Cincinnati Country Day at 4:30 p.m. The new head coaches involved in those games are Steve Frommeyer at Scott and Matt Otte at Conner.

The other match-ups are: St. Henry vs. Maysville St Patrick, 9 a.m.; Covington Catholic vs. Dixie Heights, 10:30 a.m.; Simon Kenton vs. South Laurel, noon; and Cooper vs. Cincinnati Oak Hills at 1:30 p.m.

CovCath was voted No. 1 in the Northern Kentucky pre-season coaches poll. The other ranked teams on the scrimmage games schedule are No. 3 Cooper, No. 8 Dixie Heights, No. 9 Conner, No. 11 Scott and No. 12 Simon Kenton.

CovCath senior captains named to all-state soccer team

Griffin Lamb and Michael Vogt, senior captains on the Covington Catholic boys’ soccer team that won the 9th Region title and made it to the state final, were named first-team all-state by the Kentucky High School Coaches Association.

Lamb was the leading scorer and Vogt was a defensive standout for the Colonels, who lost the state championship game against Daviess County in a penalty kick shootout.

Soccer coaches select two separate all-star teams for Regions 1-8 and Regions 9-16. The other 9th Region players named first-team all-state were Adam Snow of Cooper, Justin Crupper of Ryle and Colton Dolezal of Highlands.

The second-team nominees included Will Bedel of Ryle, Ian Manahan of St. Henry, Stephen Schutt of CovCath and Drew Rom of Highlands.
