Sec. Tilley announces hiring process for new Kentucky State Police commissioner

Justice Secretary John Tilley has announced the next steps in the process for hiring a new Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commissioner.

“Because of the high interest in this position and our desire to be thoughtful, thorough and fully transparent in our search, we want to make public what our next steps will be,” said Secretary Tilley. “As a former prosecutor, I have always had the highest admiration for the Kentucky State Police and the vital roles they serve across the Commonwealth and within the Justice Cabinet.”

After reviewing applications received by the transition team, the Administration has assembled a list of highly qualified candidates. A seven-member search committee will interview all candidates and submit names to Governor Bevin for consideration.

This search committee is comprised of Justice Secretary John Tilley, Representative Robert Benvenuti (R-Lexington), two retired KSP officers, two current KSP officers and a community representative.

Tilley continued, “Governor Bevin wants to ensure that the law enforcement community has input and buy-in on the selection of its leader. The committee makeup – in particular the four state troopers – will bring a unique and important perspective, drawing on their personal experiences, the experiences of their colleagues and the historical perspective of the agency.”

Representative Benvenuti, who will chair the committee, has worked closely with state and law enforcement agencies in the past on a variety of issues.

“I’m humbled that Governor Bevin and Secretary Tilley have asked me to be a part of this very important process,” said Representative Benvenuti. “I have the utmost respect and gratitude for the brave men and women of the Kentucky State Police. I am honored to have the opportunity to support our men and women in uniform in this meaningful way.”
