Northern Kentucky guard McDonald earns Freshman of the Week honors from Horizon League


The Horizon League office announced Monday that Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball player Drew McDonald has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week following games at Toledo and Green Bay.

McDonald averaged 15 points and nine rebounds in the two games, setting two career marks and notching his first double-double along the way. For the week, he shot 63.2 percent from the field and perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe.

A remarkable 8-for-12 shooting performance led to a career-best 18 points at Toledo, where McDonald also added five rebounds and two assists. He followed with a double-double in NKU’s Horizon League opener at Green Bay. In addition to 12 points in the contest, he controlled the boards, hauling in a career-high 13 rebounds.

The Cold Spring, Kentucky, native has been on a tear the last four games, averaging 13 points on the strength of 62.5 percent shooting to go along with 8.8 rebounds per contest. In that span he’s converted 92.3 percent of his free throws.

This marks not only the first Horizon League weekly award for McDonald, but also the first weekly accolade for men’s basketball since joining the League.

Northern Kentucky takes on Milwaukee at 8 p.m. Monday before returning home Saturday to host Wright State in NKU’s first home Horizon League game.
