Norse Notes: Northern Kentucky women host Akron Saturday; coaches radio shows begin Dec. 28


The Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team wraps up the 2015-16 nonconference season on Saturday evening when the Norse host Akron at BB&T Arena. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. with the game broadcast live on ESPN3.

Last Time Out: NKU rewrote the offensive record books for the Division I era on Wednesday with a 104-33 victory over IU-Kokomo. Six Norse scored in double figures, led by Christine Roush with 16 points. Molly Glick added 12 points, six assists and five steals while Courtney Roush also chipped in 12 points. Kelley Wiegman was perfect from beyond the arc, going 3-for-3 to score 11 points, and Faith Sanders added 11 points as well.

Shar’Rae Davis was NKU’s leader on the boards, grabbing eight rebounds to go with seven points and four steals.

About Akron:The Zips enter Saturday’s contest with a 4-5 record, having seen their three-game winning streak snapped last Sunday with a 59-51 loss against Northern Iowa. Anita Brown leads the Zips and ranks second in the MAC at 21.1 points per game on 43.9 percent shooting from the field and adds 6.9 boards per game.

Greta Burry (10.3 points, 6.2 rebounds) and Diandra Gibson (8.0 points, 7.0 rebounds) handle the inside game.

The Series: Akron tied the all-time series at a game apiece with an 82-49 win over the Norse on Nov. 15, 2014. Brown led the way with 22 points and added seven rebounds to lead four players in double-figures for the Zips. Christine Roush was 8-for-14 from the field for 19 points to lead the Norse, while Mel Doss followed up with 11 points.

— NKU set another Division I scoring record with a 104-33 win over IU-Kokomo on Wednesday night.

— Six players finished in double figures in Wednesday’s victory.

— NKU ranks second in the league in margin of victory at +16 points. NKU has averaged 79.3 points and allowed 63.3 points.

— NKU now stands on top of the Horizon League in FG shooting (46.5 percent), 3-point shooting (39.9 percent) and FT percent (76.5 percent).

— After forcing 33 turnovers on Wednesday while committing only eight, NKU now leads the League in turnover margin at +4.5.

— The 33 attempts from three-point range on Wednesday set a new program record for NKU.

— Wednesday’s win was the second time in a row and fourth overall that the Norse have shot over 50 percent in a game.

— G Christine Roush continues to climb the career scoring list, passing assistant coach Karmen Graham for 23rd on Wednesday with 1,091 points.

— Roush needs four more treys to pass Michele Tuchfarber for second all-time in made three-pointers at NKU.

— Christine and F Courtney Roush both scored in double figures for the third time in the last five games on Wednesday.

— Freshman F Molly Glick set new career highs for assists (6) and steals (5) on Wednesday, and tied her career scoring mark with 12 points.

— F Rebecca Lyttle returned to action on Wednesday after missing the previous three games, grabbing six rebounds on the night.

— F Mikayla Terry’s five assists were also a new career high. Terry also hit a pair of three-pointers and had six points on Wednesday.

— G Kelley Wiegman went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc on Wednesday and leads all League shooters at 58.8 percent from long range.

NKU basketball coaches programs begin Dec. 28

The 2015-16 NKU Basketball Coaches Show will air for the first time this season on Dec. 28.

Mellow Mushroom in Wilder, Kentucky, is hosting the show again this year and the broadcasts will once again be carried on the iHeartMedia family of radio stations, including ESPN1530 and FOXSports1360. The hour-long show begins at 7 p.m. on each date.

Seven shows will air throughout the season, featuring segments on both the Northern Kentucky men’s and women’s basketball programs. Head men’s basketball coach John Brannen and head women’s basketball coach Dawn Plitzuweit will appear weekly, while several Norse players from each team will make appearances throughout the schedule.

Hosts Jim Kelch and Steve Moeller will discuss men’s basketball and Andrew Kappes will join the broadcast to talk women’s hoops.
