Norse convert at 58 percent clip, set new single game scoring mark in victory over IU-Kokomo

Six players scored in double figures for the Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team as the Norse again rewrote their Division I record books in a 104-33 win over IU-Kokomo on Wednesday night at BB&T Arena.

Christine Roush led the way with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Molly Glick and Courtney Roush each chipped in 12 points on the evening while Kelley Wiegman and Faith Sanders each posted 11 points. Molly Franson rounded out the scoring leaders with 10 points as the Norse shot 57.9 percent (44-for-76) from the floor.

NKU also dished out 26 assists as a team, led by Glick’s six and Mikayla Terry with five, and picked up 21 steals, again led by Glick with five.

The Norse (8-2) found their outside shot early in the contest, draining four treys as a part of a 20-7 run over a five-minute span in the first quarter en route to a 27-7 lead. NKU forced 13 turnovers in the frame and converted them into 14 points.

NKU continued the hot shooting in the second quarter, going 10-for-16 from the field to extend their lead to 50-22 at the halftime break. An 11-2 run early in the stanza set the tone as Roush continued to connect from long range, hitting a pair of treys. Seven different Norse got in the scorebook in the frame as NKU got 19 points from the bench in the first half.

The Norse outscored the Cougars by a 30-3 margin in the third period, shooting at 56.5 percent and dishing out 10 assists on 13 made baskets. Molly Franson led NKU with eight points in the period, one of eight players to score, as the Norse picked up 16 points in the paint. Davis’ jumper as time expired pushed the Norse to an 80-25 lead after 30 minutes.

Faith Sanders put up nine points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field in the final quarter while Courtney Roush added six points as NKU outscored Kokomo in the fourth, 24-8, to push to the final score. NKU also won the rebounding battle in the fourth by a 11-3 margin as the Norse cruised to the final score.

Lela Crawford led the Cougars (4-7) with 14 points, while Dejianna Butler pulled down eight rebounds.

NKU closes out the nonconference schedule on Saturday, welcoming in Akron to open the front end of a doubleheader with the men’s team. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m., with the action carried live on ESPN3.

NORSE NOTES

· The 104 points set a new scoring record for the Norse in the Division I era, and marked the 12th time NKU has eclipsed the century mark. It was the most points NKU had scored in a game since Dec. 1, 2011, when NKU took a 106-101 victory in triple-overtime on the road against Saint Joseph’s (Ind.).

· NKU’s 33 attempts from long range set a new program record, eclipsing the previous record of 31, set on Feb. 6, 2014 in a 72-64 win over Mercer.

· With her 16 points, Christine Roush leapfrogged NKU assistant coach Karmen Graham for 23rd on the career scoring list. Roush now stands with 1,091 career points, and needs 20 points to pass Clare Lester (1981-85) and Nancy Dickman (1980-82, 183-85) for 21st all-time.
