Franson, Roush lead fourth-quarter comeback as Norse top Robert Morris

Career days from Molly Franson and Courtney Roush led a dramatic fourth quarter comeback for the Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team in a 72-70 win over Robert Morris on Sunday at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Franson led the Norse with 16 points, all in the second half, and eight rebounds while Courtney Roush scored 10 points, including six in the fourth quarter. Together, Franson and Roush accounted for 16 of NKU’s 18 fourth-quarter points.

With 5:05 left in the game, Shar’Rae Davis picked up an offensive rebound off a Kelley Wiegman miss and, looking to put it off an RMU player and out of bounds, bounced the ball to Roush for a layup to put the Norse ahead for good.

The basket came in the midst of a 13-2 Norse run spanning 5:36 of the fourth quarter. NKU shot 7-for-10 from inside the arc in the fourth quarter and 46.6 percent (27-for-58) on the game.

Wiegman and Christine Roush each added 12 points for the Norse, all from long range, while Rianna Gayheart added nine points and a season-high seven assists.

The first half was a shootout between the teams, as the Norse and Colonials each shot over 50 percent from the field. NKU was even better from beyond the arc, hitting 7-of-12 long-distance shots. A 13-1 RMU run in the first quarter set the tone for the first half, as the Colonials carried a 44-37 lead into halftime.
