Career high 18 points from Lyttle power NKU women to home win over Tennessee Tech


Rebecca Lyttle posted a career-high 18 points on Friday evening as the Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team used a strong third quarter to defeat Tennessee Tech, 88-62, at BB&T Arena.

Lyttle was two rebounds shy of her third-straight double-double as she put together a complete game with eight boards, four assists, three blocks and a pair of steals. Her 18 points came on a 7-of-10 showing from the floor and 3-of-4 performance from the free throw line.

TTU (2-3) was led by Samaria Howard with 16 points and three boards as the Golden Eagles won the rebounding battle, 40-29.

NKU (4-1) shot a season-high 57.7 percent (30-for-52) from the floor and went 21-for-25 from the charity stripe for 84 percent.

The Norse opened the game on an 8-0 run bookended by a pair of triples from Kelley Wiegman and Glick, holding TTU without a basket for the first three minutes.

The Norse never trailed in the game, but an 8-2 Golden Eagle run in the second quarter helped TTU come within two points of the Norse at the 6:17 mark. Glick halted the Tennessee Tech run by connecting from long range to extend the Norse lead to 29-24 with 5:45 to play in the first half.

Three-straight points from Kasey Uetrecht and layup and triple from Shar’rae Davis helped NKU out to an 8-1 run to lead 38-31 at halftime.

The NKU offense dominated the third quarter. Lyttle and Glick paired up to extend the Norse lead to 48-36 at the 6:28 mark, each scoring five points within the first four minutes.

Five-straight points from Christine Roush beginning with a triple at the 3:33 mark keyed a 10-0 run for the Norse. NKU held Tennessee Tech without a field goal for the final four minutes of the third period while the Norse shot 81.8 percent (9-for-11) from the floor in the quarter.

NKU led 62-46 entering the final period and kept at least 17-point distance from the Golden Eagles throughout the end of the game.

The Norse return to the court Sunday, Nov. 29, when they travel to take on Robert Morris at 1 p.m. before turning around to host Kentucky on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at BB&T Arena.

NORSE NOTES:

· The victory gives the Norse their first 3-0 home start since the 2011-12 season, and their first in the Division I era.

· Roush’s 11 total points helped her to surpass Jesse Slack for 28th on NKU’s all-time scoring list.

· Mikayla Terry set a career high with three of NKU’s 10 steals on the game.
