Kentucky Arts Council offers educational summer programs for teachers, professionals

Though school is out, curriculum planning is a topic that never seems to take the summer off. With the Kentucky Department of Education’s recent vote to adopt the national standards for teaching arts, the council wanted to remind Kentucky’s teachers and educational leaders about an important program available through the Kentucky Arts Council.

The Specialists with Art Tactics program supports the utilization of arts education professionals who are available to provide three- to six-hour consultancies to assist Kentucky schools in developing plans and assessment tools for integrating the arts across the curriculum. Consultancy fees are paid by the arts council.

In addition to helping you navigate the waters of the new standards, the SWAT consultants can help your school write a more meaningful self-evaluation of your arts curriculum for the program review. When schools know how to critically evaluate their own programs, they see the birth of better ideas about how students can learn from and experience the arts.

The deadline to apply for a SWAT consultancy is June 30. Kentucky teachers and school administrators should study the information about SWAT and consider their school’s needs.

In order to alleviate transportation costs as a barrier to the arts, the arts council offers its TranspARTation grant, which helps defray the cost of taking students to see art up close. The deadline to apply for TranspARTation grants is Aug. 17 for arts education experiences scheduled between Oct. 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. The application is open to any school, public or private, that supports K-12 education.

Contact the arts council here if you have any questions.
