Looking to build their own workforce, eight local companies will also brighten the futures of 150 area high school students.

On Thursday, June 11th, NaviGo College and Career Prep Services and the Northern Kentucky Education Council will recognize those eight companies and the 150 students they selected to be part of the 2015-16 NaviGo Scholars Program.

Toyota, Duke Energy, Mazak, Pomeroy, Citi, Heritage Bank, C-Forward and Toyota Boshoku combed through applications from more than 200 local students hoping to be part of the NaviGo Scholars program.

The NaviGo Scholars program focuses primarily on recruiting and training for the most needed jobs in our area. The Northern Kentucky Education Council and NaviGo College and Career Prep Services collaborated with the Northern Kentucky Workforce Investment Board and the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce to identify career areas that were in need of jobs.

Sponsors looked for students with interests that connected with their work forces. Identifying those students before they ever graduate from high school will allow the companies to work with students who could potentially fill their future job needs.

In turn, students will get training and experience they may not have received without the NaviGo Scholars program. In addition, NaviGo will provide a college and career coach for each of the students.

This approach not only helps serve the region’s workforce needs and assists selected students with preparation of needed skills beyond high school, but also assists in recruiting and training possible future employees for participating companies.

Students selected as NaviGo Futures Scholars will meet in small cohort groups on a monthly basis with ongoing communication provided by the NaviGo Coach. Students selected as NaviGo Scholars Connects meet one-on-one with a NaviGo Coach on a monthly basis. NaviGo hires and trains the most effective NaviGo Coaches for this type of program and monitors the progress of the Scholars throughout the year.

Interested parties are encouraged to be part of this unique partnership between businesses, local high schools, local post-secondary schools, communities and families.

The scholars announcement will be on June 11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Gateway Community and Techncal College Convening Center, 500 Technology Way, Florence. It is open to the public.
