Covington Latin junior, Will Geers, makes perfect 36 score on ACT

Will Geers, a 15-year-old junior at Covington Latin School, scored a 36 composite score on the ACT, attaining the examination’s highest possible score.

“I was a little surprised,” Geers said when asked about his score. “I received a 34 on the practice test I had taken a few month earlier and was going to score somewhere around that on the actual test.”

His perfect score is particularly notable because it was achieved on his first real attempt at the test. He had taken the ACT while a CLS freshman as part of the Duke University Talent Identification Program.

At age 13, Geers received the Grand Recognition from Duke TIP for his outstanding score of 32. In 2014, the national ACT average was 21 and Kentucky’s average was 19.9.

He is the son of James and Mary Geers.

In addition to his passion and aptitude for academics, Geers is involved with a number of Latin School’s extracurricular offerings, including Debate Team, Pro-Life Club and T.E.A.M.S. (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science). He hopes to study either Biochemistry or Molecular Genetics in college and feels his time a CLS is preparing him for such a challenging and rigorous course of study.

As Covington Latin School’s Director of Advancement Carl Goodmonson put it: “Beyond his formidable intellect and considerable academic achievements, he couldn’t be more humble, kind-hearted, good-natured student, the kind of quality individual who you can’t help but root for. We applaud his spectacular achievement.”

We’re very grateful to have had Will’s story picked up – not to mention to how much we all value and welcome the addition of such an impressive daily newspaper in our region. Thanks on both counts.

And Donald, thank you for reading the piece but for future reference, you should be aware that “proofreaders” is actually one word.

Thanks, Carl. The story was enormously popular, as it should have been. We love celebrating the successes of great kids and good students. Glad to have the opportunity to do that!
