Latonia Water Park/Splash Pad at Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex closed for emergency repair

Electricians and Covington Public Works technicians are working furiously to fix the water filtration system at the Latonia Water Park/Splash Pad heading into what is expected to be the hottest weekend of the year.

The pool didn’t open as expected at noon Friday when employees found the pump not working. What was expected to be a relatively quick fix – the pump’s replacement – led to the discovery of electrical issues, said Ken Smith, the City’s Neighborhood Services Director.

“This is terrible timing – believe me, we know,” Smith said. “Residents should understand that we are doing everything we can to get the complex back open as soon as possible.”

Smith said the City has authorized overtime and bringing in outside help to get the filtration system fixed.

“The hard reality is that the park is 16 years old and equipment like this – as any homeowner with a pool knows – is temperamental and wears out quickly,” he said.

The water park is part of the Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex at 43rd and Church streets in Latonia.

Normal hours are noon to 6 p.m., seven days a week. On weekends, 300 to 400 people come to the facility, which includes water slides, hoses, sprinklers and play equipment.

Residents should monitor the Facebook pages of the City and its Parks & Recreation Department to find out when the park reopens. They can be found HERE and HERE.

The City will also put the news on its website, which can be found HERE.

We have one water facility in Covington but we pay the higher taxes in this state??? Kids have nothing to do in Summer but one Waterpark..Took out pools and other facility’s but never replaced them.. Where does all of our money go to?? I have seen nothing improved but by personal buisness ownership on Madison Avenue. No new nothing for 16 years for kids or families to go that is affordable Waterpark or pools or fun public parks?
