Covington Latin senior Bossert win national poster contest for second year in a row

For the second year in a row, a Covington Latin School student has won first place in a national poster contest. Maria Bossert ‘18 won recognition for her original work depicting the theme, El español en marcha (“Spanish on the move”). The poster contest is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).

Bossert, of Ft. Mitchell won first place for the hand-drawn high school category. “I decided to draw a person running to indicate the motion of Spanish and Portuguese as they spread throughout the world. I drew the shoes of the runner as the flags of Spain and Portugal, symbolizing how the languages have moved over time and will continue to influence more countries in the future.”

Bossert will be attending Lafayette College in Easton, PA in the fall where she plans to study Law and Art. “I have only taken Spanish for two years, but it has become an important aspect of my life that I hope to continue into the future. Knowing Spanish may be important to my future career, since I am very interested in immigration law.”

Bossert was featured in a Northern Kentucky Tribune story in December 2016, focused on how her family showcases her art on its Christmas cards.

Students from 70 different chapters across the U.S. and Canada entered AATSP’s poster contest, which is judged both by their Board and Poster Contest Committee. Founded in 1917, it is the oldest professional association in the U.S. devoted to the study of a modern foreign language.

While Covington Latin School is known for its acceleration and rigorous classical curriculum, Spanish and German are also offered to upperclassmen. Spanish teacher Lindsay Skipper is entering her fifth year at CLS.
