St. Henry wins Class 1A girls state track meet with most points coming in running events

St. Henry scored 55 points in nine running events to finish on top in the girls team standings at the Class 1A state track and field meet on Thursday at the University of Kentucky.

The only event the Crusaders won was the 4 x 400 relay, but they finished with 58 points to take home the championship trophy. Owensboro Catholic was second with 46.2 points, followed by University Heights with 45 and Newport Central Catholic with 44.

This is the 11th time St. Henry has won the girls small-school state meet. The Crusaders placed second the last two years before claiming another title.

Walton-Verona opened Thursday’s state meet with a victory in the 4 x 800 relay and NewCath won both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays.

There were no local winners in individual girls events. St. Henry junior Natalie Pope finished second in the 400 dash, third in the 200 dash and fifth in the 100 dash to score 18 points for the Crusaders. She was also a member of the winning 4 x 400 relay team that netted 10 points.

St. Henry senior Malia Heck scored nine points in two distance events and the 4 x 200 relay team picked up eight points for placing second.

Danville won the Class 1A boys team title with 73 points. Walton-Verona was runner-up with 63 points and St. Henry finished third with 58.6 points.

Walton-Verona scored 40 of its 63 points with victories in four events. Senior Luke Lawson won both the 110 and 300 hurdles for the second consecutive year and junior Trey Bonne took first place in the high jump. Bonne was also a member of the Bearcats’ 4 x 800 relay team that finished first.

Bellevue senior Seth Evers won the 200 dash for the second year in a row and placed second in both the 100 and 400.  St. Henry senior Ethan Snyder got the gold medal in the 3200 run and Lloyd eighth-grader Jake Davidson took the pole vault title.

The Class 2A state meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Friday and Class 3A competition is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the University of Kentucky.
