Rustic garden rooms, colorful planters, elaborate ponds, Japanese-inspired archways, whimsical beds of wildflowers – all are highlighted as part of an upcoming KET special that takes viewers behind fences and gates to enjoy some of Kentucky’s most beautiful private gardens.
Among them are two Newport private ‘pocket’ gardens.
Kentucky’s Secret Gardens airs tonight at 9/8 p.m. on KET and Monday, May 21 at 9/8 pm on KET2.

The program visits a variety of private gardens, both large and small, rural and urban, throughout the state. Stops include the Garden at Lincliff, the Louisville garden of the late mystery writer Sue Grafton and her husband, Steven Humphrey, who painstakingly restored the grounds of a classic 1912 estate.
Other featured gardens are:
· Garden of Joe Dietz and Tim Brooks, Lexington
The secluded, Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired backyard incorporates an elaborate bonsai collection and orchid showcase.
· Garden of Susan Bradley and Buzz Daugherty, near Versailles
A former horse pasture has been transformed into an array of gardens, including multiple “mini gardens” with fanciful themes.
· Garden of Mary and Gene Startzman, Berea
This backyard garden offers a meandering collection of delightful garden rooms, complete with an above-ground koi pond and treetop balcony.
· Garden of Dr. Marilyn McMillen at Hickorylands Farm, Eubank
More than 20 acres of the 400-acre farm have been transformed into formal and rustic garden rooms, enclosed by an elaborate design of evergreens, gates and fountains.
· Pocket gardens of Emery Schmidt and Jim Swearingen and Wes and Scott Ledyard, Newport
These two Newport homes prove that beautiful gardens can be created even in the smallest, urban spaces.
· Wildflower Meadow of Allen and Rose Bush, near Salvisa
In this mini-segment, Allen Bush showcases his large wildflower meadow and offers tips on creating a meadow even in a small, backyard space.
The program also features footage from the 2017 Open Gates to Bluegrass Living Garden Tour, hosted by The Lexington Council of Garden Clubs. And, gardening expert and program host Tavia Cathcart Brown, who has co-authored books on wildflowers and on Kentucky’s Bernheim Forest, shares general gardening tips to help viewers’ own home gardens thrive.
