NKU’s Saturday of Service event paid tribute to Pres. St. Amand (who pitched in) by beautifying campus

Northern Kentucky University’s students regularly celebrate a Saturday of Service, but there was nothing ‘regular’ about the celebration of Earth Day by honoring Interin President Gerry St. Amand and his wife Peggy.

And there’s nothing ‘regular’ about the St. Amands, either. True to form they were right there working side by side with the students to beautify the NKU campus.

“Interim President St. Amand jumped right into leading our university during this transition year. He guided us through challenges and helped kick off our 50th Anniversary celebration,” said Sami Dada, outgoing student body president.

“I speak for all the students when I say we were lucky to have him leading us. This day was a way to thank him for all he has done for our campus community.”

Students beautified the campus by spreading mulch, painting, planting and cleaning in preparation for commencement. The Student Government Association and Northern Kentucky Leadership Institute partnered to hold the day of service event. Students contributed 84 total hours of service.

“Peggy and I had a great time working side-by-side with students to spruce up the campus just prior to commencement. The enthusiasm the students had was truly infectious,” said Interim President St. Amand.

“I’m not sure how I ended up on the tree planting team, but I can thank the stand out NKU Horticulture team for their landscaping direction and lending a hand on the toughest holes. Everyone pitched in and now the campus looks great.”

NKU’s Office of Student Engagement has hosted “Service on Saturday” events since 2002.

Many of the service days, like this one, are coordinated with holidays and campus events. The community service day allows students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to give back by taking part in a coordinated service effort.
