Strong pitching and timely hitting allowed the Washington Wild Things to pull out a 3-1 win over the visiting Florence Freedom on Saturday night.

Wild Things starting pitcher Daniel Garmendia allowed just three hits and a run in 5 1/3 innings on the mound. The Washington bullpen held Florence scoreless as the Wild Things defeated the Freedom for the second straight night.

After Florence took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, Kyle Pollock clubbed a two-run homer to give Washington a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the frame. The Wild Things added an insurance run in the seventh inning and held on for the victory.

Florence starter Christian DeLeon went 6 1/3 innings and allowed five hits and three runs. He also struck out five batters.

Craig Lepre went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Florence. Andre Mercurio scored the lone Freedom run on Lepre’s sacrifice fly.

Florence and Washington conclude the three-game series Sunday at 5:35 p.m. The Freedom (8-6 overall record) will try to avoid being swept in the weekend series.
