Campbell County Public Library calendar for May includes events and activities at all branches


A list of May events and programs at the Campbell County Public Library branches is provided here.

The Campbell County Public Library operates four branches. The Cold Spring Branch is located at 3920 Alexandria Pike in Cold Spring, phone 859-781-6166. The Carrico/Fort Thomas Branch is located at 1000 Highland Ave. in Fort Thomas, phone 859-572-5033. The Newport Branch is located at 901 E. Sixth St. in Newport, phone 859-572-5035. The Alexandria Branch is located at 8830 Alexandria Pike in Alexandria, phone 859-572-7463.
There are two Express locations for pickups and returns in Silver Grove and Melbourne.

Hours for Cold Spring, Carrico/Fort Thomas and Newport branches are 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Hours for Alexandria are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday-Friday; 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and closed Sunday and Monday. For more information, click here.

Homeschool STEAM Blast: The Small World
2 pm Wednesday, May 2
Use microscopes to discover the small world around us. Learn to prepare a slide and look at everyday items. Learn to extract strawberry DNA and look at the under the microscope. There will also be prepared slides to look through and see a fascinating world of the microscopic. Ages 11-19. Registration required.

Cold Spring Coding Club
6:30 pm Thursday, May 3
Begin your journey in creating your own unique space on the internet, or in video games such as Minecraft. We will be starting with Java in a Minecraft setting using a Python program, and move onto other codes in future months. Ages 11 & up. Register early since laptops are limited.

St. Elizabeth Mobile Mammography
Noon-4:30 pm Friday, May 4
The St. Elizabeth Mobile Mammography will offer screenings. Covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance companies under the following guidelines: Ages 35-40 Baseline Screening; Over 40 an annual screening. Dungeons & Dragons
6-8 pm Friday, May 4
Welcoming experienced and new players alike, we will be playing Dungeons and Dragons 5e. If you don’t know how to make a character, we will have pre-generated characters to use. If you would like to make your own character, we will be making characters and leveling up from 6 to about 7 pm. Professor Kathleen Quinn from the NKU History and Geography Department discusses Sappho of Lesbos (ca. 630-570 B.C.), who was the most famous female poet from the ancient Greek world, and yet concrete details about her life and career on a remote island in the Mediterranean remain frustratingly elusive. Arts & Culture Series: KSO presents The Covington Devou-Doo Daddies
7 pm Friday, May 25
The fusion of the old jazz and swing with modern rock made for some great energetic up-beat music, which the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra enthusiastically recreates with the The Covington Devou-Doo Daddies. This 10-pc show band along with the other KSO authentic spin-off groups (Newport Ragtime Band, Flood Wall Jazz Quintet, KSO Boogie Band), allows the Symphony to focus on a style / era of music that is unique and rarely heard in local live performance. Regional History Series: Kentucky’s Private Civil War

Dr. Christopher Phillips from the University of Cincinnati discusses aspects of the Civil War in Kentucky that are less well known, in which loyalty politics deeply affected the state during the war and for many years after. In the mesh of conflicting stances and allegiances across the middle border, the war hastened their realignments into newly fashioned “communities of allegiance,” aligned according to their war loyalties and comprised of discrete networks that competed for local legitimacy as the lines of military and governmental authority developed around them. Opening Reception: Traveling Exhibition – Lineillism Revealed
6-8 pm Friday, May 18
In 2000, local artist Jim “J.C.” Hall suffered an intense attack of shingles, which caused him to see in vertical lines. He began painting what he saw, creating a new art technique, “Lineillism.” Join us as we celebrate the art and life of Jim Hall Friday, May 18 – 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. at an opening reception for Lineillism Revealed, a traveling exhibit showcasing Mr. Hall’s paintings. The event will also feature a special screening of the award-winning documentary Lines of Sight, presented by film and exhibit creator Steve Oldfield. Mr. Oldfield is a native of Bellevue, Kentucky. The film screening begins at 6:30 p.m. on the main level of the Library followed by an opportunity to tour the exhibit. Doors open at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the Community Room. Ages 10 & up. Registration required.

Traveling Exhibition – Lineillism Revealed

The exhibit includes 10 original Lineillism paintings, two original Jim Hall paintings in other styles, two 70-year-old paintings Mr. Hall painted as a boy, and artifacts from Mr. Hall’s former home studio. Ages 10 & up. No need to register.

Machine Sew a Pillow with Fat Quarter Mobile Sewing classes
1-3 pm Saturday, May 19
In this 2-hour class with Fat Quarter, learn how to set up the machine – load a bobbin, choose a stitch, thread a sewing machine, and practice stitching. We will make a pillow or tote. Sewing machines and all materials provided. ASL interpreters provided for those members of our Deaf community. Class size is limited to 8 attendees. Ages 12 & up. Registration required.

Mason Jar Painting

Regional History Series: Kentucky’s Settlement & Statehood
7 pm Thursday, May 31
Dr. James C. Klotter, State Historian of Kentucky, discusses Kentucky’s settlement and statehood. In 1792 Kentucky became a state. But much had occurred before statehood. Who were those who immigrated here? Why did they come? What problems did they face? How did statehood evolve? Did Kentuckians consider other options? Ages 18 & up. Registration required.

Early Childhood Literacy Fair
10 am-Noon Saturday, May 5
Join us for a morning of information & fun! Local community partners will answer your questions. Children can get free developmental and vision screenings. Meet Batman. There will be face painters & balloon artists to create fanastical creations. Along with several ” Learn-as-You Play” Stations for the children, “Songs for Seeds,” an award winning music program will be here to bring a joyful note to the morning. Along with snacks, there will be a raffle for educational toys + a gift card for those who get a vision screening. Each child that comes to our annual event will take home a free book. Families, especially young ones. No need to register.

Children’s Story Thyme
10 am Friday, May 25
This month’s theme is Tea Party with Mamma to celebrate a belated Mother’s Day! Miss Amy will be reading Tea Rex by Molly Idle and we will be making a simple teacup card out of recycled materials for an eco friendly craft. Come enjoy this relaxed story time tea. In the 2016-2017 fiscal year, there were 571,807 visits to the Library and more than 1.2 million items were checked out. More than 95,000 e-materials were downloaded, there were more than 2,800 programs offered (with attendance topping 58,000), and more than 24,000 calls were made to our free children’s story telling phone line.
The Library makes every reasonable effort to provide equal access to all patrons.
