NKYEC ‘Excellence in Education’ celebrates students for academics, leadership, perseverance


The Northern Kentucky Education Council’s Excellence in Education Celebration honors outstanding students in Northern Kentucky.

Here are the winners of special awards made at NKYEC’s annual awards dinner:

Tanvi Brar

Academic All-Stars

Recognizing high school seniors who excel in academics

Tanvi Brar
Beechwood High School
Tanvi has earned a 4.35 GPA and a 36 composite ACT score. She is first in her class and has taken 10 AP classes. She was named one of the top science students in the District Governor’s Cup Competition and tutors students in chemistry. She is yearbook editor and an active volunteer. She will be attending Ohio University, majoring in bio-chemistry.

Alexandra Grayson
Ryle High School

Alex Grayson

Alexandra has earned a 4.64 GPA and an ACT composite score of 35. She has taken 10 AP classes in addition to 10 Honor courses. She is involved in the National Honor Society, the NKY Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Tri-State Honors Orchestra, the Student Council, the Academic Team, and extensive community service. She is a National Merit Scholar who will attend Harvard to student molecular and cellular biology.

Lindsey Goldsberry
Conner High School

Lindsey has a 4.53 BPA and an ACT composite score of 30. She is enrolled in Honors, AP and Dual Enrollment Classes. She has competed in the state Latin Convention, winning first place for sculpture and two academic awards. She is a leader on the soccer field and off and tutors her peers in Latin. She will enter Georgetown College on a soccer scholarship.

Lindsey Goldsberry

Emma Wahlbrink
Kenton County Academies of Innovation and Technology

Emma has a 4.28 GPA and an ACT composite score of 33. She is at the top of her class, taking dual credit courses at NKU and AP and Honors classes. She conducted original research that she presented to state legislators on the prevalence of BPA in water bottles. She has also done research on the effect of lupus on the immune system and on silver nanoparticles that she hopes will lead to making clothing and medical resources resistant to bacteria. She will be attending the University of Kentucky in the fall in pre-med and studying biology.

Jose Cruz Hernandez
Carroll County Area Tech Center

Emma Wahlbrink

Jose began his welding studies as a junior and job-shadowed at LG&E Ghent Station where he welded a platform and fabricated and welded steps to it. He has overcome being deaf to accomplish excellent ratings from his supervisors. He plans to pursue a career in welding.

Jacob Vallandingham
Kenton County Academies of Innovation and Technology

Jacob has a GPA of 3.51 and will have completed 5 dual-credit courses. He has completed year-long research projects utilizing his knowledge of engineering and is completing an internship at Skill Craft. He is a proficient Inventor Draftsman and will work for Skill Craft after graduations.

Bryan Padilla
Conner High School

Bryan serves on the Boone County School District Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, as the student representative on the Boone County Board of Education and the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence Student Voice Team. Additionally, he is a member of the Conner High School Leadership League, a 4-year NaviGo Scholar, co-founder of the NaviGo Student Board, and a Tutor for middle and high school level students. In addition to his many leadership roles, Bryan was accepted and attended the MIT Office of Engineering Outreach Program’s Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science.

Jacob Vallandingham

Brooke Ramsey
Lloyd Memorial High School

Brooke is a senior and the current Senior class Vice President, Vice President of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Student Council. Brooke is also an academic leader by participating in NKU ’s school-based scholar program in the morning and in the afternoon she participates in Gateway Community College’s Logistics. In addition, she has added her Logistics Co-Op position at Cengage. Brooke has received the 2017 AJC Simon Lazarus Jr. Award. She has organized multiple fundraising events to benefit the American Heart Association and Volleyball teams. Her volunteer commitments are varied and include the Erlanger Lions Club, The Erlanger Youth Service Center, the Elsmere City Clean-Up, and the Villa Springs Health Center. Brooke has also received multiple awards for leadership in Volleyball and Soccer.
