Horizon Community Funds, Kentucky Philanthropy Initiative offering ‘Power in Numbers;’ sign up here

Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky and the Kentucky Philanthropy Initiative have announced details for the April 17 Power in Numbers symposium, to be held at the St. Elizabeth Technology and Education Center in Erlanger from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. that day.

Power in Numbers will focus on a recent study addressing the significant Transfer of Wealth taking place in Northern Kentucky, and the opportunity to capture some of that wealth to invest back into the community, especially in the areas of poverty, workforce, health, and education.

“We are proud to partner with the Kentucky Philanthropy Initiative to present a day of learning and engagement,” said Nancy Grayson, President of Horizon Community Funds. “Data from their recent Transfer of Wealth Study highlight an opportunity for our region to make a positive impact on some of the most pressing issues Northern Kentucky is facing.”

The following sessions will be presented at the event:

The Kentucky Transfer of Wealth Study:  This recently-completed study identifies the significant wealth that will pass between generations over the next 50 years. The data provides a clear illustration of the great potential for our state and communities. Encouraging people to consider their communities among their heirs and retaining a modest percentage of this wealth transfer in our community foundations can generate substantial resources toward meeting future needs.

Leveraging Giving through Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky: Learn more about Northern Kentucky’s own community foundation and how we are leveraging giving to make a bigger impact in our community.   Nancy Grayson, President of Horizon Community Funds, will also highlight philanthropic data and trends.

What do we know about economic opportunity in Northern Kentucky?:  Dr. Matthew Ruther,  University of Louisville  faculty member and director of the Kentucky State Data Center, uses recent data and statistics to paint a picture in Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties. While Northern Kentucky compares favorably to other areas of the Commonwealth, local income levels are tied to important social factors like health, education and workforce development.

The Future of Cancer Prevention and Treatment in Northern Kentucky: Learn more about the prevalence of cancer in our region and how St. Elizabeth is partnering with the community to develop a state-of-the-art Cancer Center.   Dr. Doug Flora, Oncology Medical Director, St. Elizabeth Healthcare will share how this center – through genetic screening, precision medicine, and attracting the best and brightest talent – will dramatically improve the landscape for cancer care.

Investing in Our Future: Preparing each and every one of our youth in Northern Kentucky for College, Career and Life is complicated and complex. Speakers will share progress to date and recent learnings from convening 300 business, education, and community thought leaders. In addition, learn about two regional cutting edge initiatives; Resilient and Ready by Design, and the Ignite Institute.

GROW NKY: Learn about GROW NKY (Growing Regional Outcomes through Workforce), a comprehensive, holistic approach by NKY’s key regional workforce partners who are committed to driving outcomes for talent pipeline management that will maintain and grow a strong economy and ensure that NKY will attract future business because of a strategic workforce effort, unique to the Commonwealth.

Efforts will be focused on NKY’s high demand sectors:  Advanced Manufacturing, IT, Advanced Logistics, Health Sciences, Financial Services and Construction. Our panel will provide insights on the significance of this effort, being led by the NKY Chamber, and expected outcomes, along with explaining why such an effort is critical for continued economic development success in our region.

Attendees will participate in conversations related to the information and strategies presented throughout the day, and Northern Kentucky youth who have been empowered through philanthropy will also share their inspiring stories.
