Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky Awarded $5,000 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award

Bilz Insurance has earned a 2018 Safeco Insurance® Make More Happen Award in recognition of its exceptional volunteerism and commitment to making positive change happen in the local community.

The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky provides shelter for local women and men throughout the winter in the belief that homelessness is an emergency and that shelter is a basic necessity for human beings. The nonprofit program has received a $5,000 donation from Bilz Insurance made possible through a 2018 Safeco® Make More Happen Award and hopes to double the amount with support from local residents on social media (provided photo)

The award includes a $5,000 donation that will go directly to the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing shelter to those in need, which is life-saving in the winter and life-changing in the summer.

“My team and I have worked with the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky for nearly 10 years, and we are incredibly thankful for being awarded the Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award so we can give back even more,” said Karen Toll, an independent agent for Bilz Insurance. “The Emergency Shelter has had a significant impact on our community and these funds will help them continue to make a difference.”

Beginning on Wednesday, April 11, Bilz Insurance and the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky will have their story featured on the official Safeco Insurance Facebook page (Facebook.com/SafecoInsurance) with a chance to raise an additional $5,000. If the story receives at least 200 likes, comments or shares on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn, the total donation for the nonprofit will double to $10,000.

“We are excited to share the inspiring stories of our agents with their communities through social media while raising funds for these outstanding nonprofit organizations,” said Matthew Dent, Safeco Insurance Mid-Atlantic Region Territory Manager. “Safeco’s Make More Happen Awards program helps to recognize the amazing work agents do in areas like Covington and motivate others to do the same.”

Safeco’s Make More Happen Awards focus on nonprofits in the areas of health and safety, education and civil service. Bilz Insurance was selected for a Make More Happen Award based on a photo and application demonstrating its commitment to the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky, which serves adult women and men throughout the winter starting Nov. 1.

The team at Bilz Insurance became involved with the emergency shelter when they took note of the homeless walking outside their offices in the winter and knew they had to do something to help. They began collecting coats and making donations in addition to volunteering by cooking and serving shelter residents.

The insurance agency continues to support the cause on a daily basis by donating excess luncheon food and personal clothing items to homeless individuals, while some employees have also taken on additional responsibilities including planning shelter fundraisers and developing menus for event guests.

For each night a guest visits, the organization spends an average of $20 to provide them with a comfortable place to stay. With a $10,000 donation, the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky will be able to provide accommodations for an additional 500 guests, enabling them to rest well and focus on improving their living situations.

Throughout 2018, Safeco will select a total of 24 independent agents for awards and donate up to $240,000 to the nonprofits they support. The Make More Happen Awards are a part of Safeco Insurance’s Agent Giving Program.
