Thomas More’s Temple named Great Lakes Region Player of the Year; Owings also tabbed first team

Thomas More College women’s basketball standout Madison Temple has been named the Great Lakes Region Player of the Year by D3hoops.com.

Temple, a junior guard from Cincinnati and a graduate of Anderson High School, was joined on the All-Great Lakes Region first team by Thomas More senior guard Abby Owings.

Temple, who was also named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Player of the Year, finished fourth in the league in scoring at 18.1 points per game. She also finished sixth in the league in rebounding (7.0 rpg), second in field-goal percentage (.566), first in assists (5.4 apg), fifth in steals (2.3 spg), and first in free throw (.881) and 3-point (.462) percentages.

Temple also recorded her 1,000th career point this season at the Hoop N’ Surf Classic in Hawaii. A week ago during a 72-57 win at Hope (Mich.) College, Temple scored nine of her game-high 25 points in the final quarter as the Saints (30-1) won their 29th consecutive game and earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Final Four.

Owings, a Simon Kenton High School graduate who was named a preseason All-American, is a Jostens Trophy finalist and finished seventh in the league in scoring at 14.9 points per game. Owings also finished fourth in assists and steals (3.1 apg, 2.5 spg), second in both 3-point percentage (.454) and 3-pointers made (2.7), and third with her assist/turnover ratio (2.2).

Owings also became Thomas More’s all-time leading scorer this season with more than 1,700 career points.

Thomas More, which is ranked No. 3 nationally in the NCAA Division III poll, has not lost since a 61-58 setback at Rochester (N.Y.) on Nov. 18. The Saints will meet top-ranked Amherst College (31-0) on Friday at the Final Four at Rochester, Minn.
