Date set for 199C: THE BIG 5; 5th annual Opening Day baseball-themed art exhibit and block party

BLDG and Renaissance Covington have announced the date for the Fifth Annual 199C: The Big 5, the region’s only art exhibit and block party celebrating the Reds and Opening Day.

The event will take place March 31, 2018 from 6 .p.m to 10 p.m. in Covington.

BLDG Gallery’s fifth annual 199C (named for the Pantone color of the Reds) is a collaborative art exhibition and block party celebrating two great achievements: Baseball and the Cincinnati Reds. There are few places on earth where a sport and a team are so beloved by a community, and 199C celebrates this unique atmosphere with highly creative original works by hand-selected local and regional artists.

The event is family friendly and free to the public.

Inside the gallery of BLDG, the art exhibition 199C: The Big 5 features original work by local and regional artists who will celebrate this landmark anniversary by showcasing all things inspired by the number 5, baseball and its fandom in Reds Country.

The number 5 represents many things and carries meaning on multiple levels.

For some, it marks a major milestone or serves as a symbol of good fortune. Others will immediately picture the legendary Johnny “Little General” Bench. There’s also the five senses, the 5-way, the high five, the five-second rule and Jackson 5 just to name a few (or five). There’s so much more in store with this exhibition that aims to capture and highlight the inspiration The Big 5 brings to us all.

Outside of the gallery, nonprofit partner Renaissance Covington has organized an array of experiences to engage the community, welcome residents and visitors. On Pike Street, visitors will have the opportunity to share their first memories about the Reds, participate in the chalk drawing competition, vote on their favorite storefront installation, and drink and eat from local breweries, distilleries and eateries.

Remarking on why Reds fans should come to this event, Zach Evans, designer at BLDG says, “This is a massive milestone for a home grown event, it’s the only event where you can get rocked, celebrate Opening Day and get some really killer Reds art.”

Katie Meyer, Executive Director of Renaissance Covington adds, “It’s fun, it’s funky and always a blast. Anyone who loves the Reds and baseball should come on down and enjoy what Covington has to offer.”

199C is supported by the generosity of community contributions to the ArtsWave Campaign.
