CovCath senior guard C.J. Fredrick has been named Player of the Year in Kentucky boys high school basketball by the Gatorade Company.

Each year, the company selects a top player in each state based on athletic excellence, academic achievement and extra curricular activities. Fredrick is the first CovCath basketball player to attain the Kentucky award and is now a finalist for national Player of the Year that will be announced later this month.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound senior guard is averaging 22.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals for the Colonels, who have a 31-4 record going into next week’s state tournament. He already set a school single-season scoring record with 789 points and he has 1,530 points over his three-year varsity career.

Fredrick, a University of Iowa recruit, is among the finalists for Mr. Kentucky Basketball this season. He has maintained a 3.15 grade point average while doing volunteer work at a soup kitchen and youth basketball league.

As winner of the Gatorade state award, he’ll be asked to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a $1,000 grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program.
