NKU students respond to ‘Service on Saturday’ by volunteering over 1,000 hours of community service

Northern Kentucky University’s Office of Student Engagement hosted its February “Service on Saturday” event to celebrate NKU’s homecoming.

The community service day allows students, faculty and staff the opportunity to give back by taking part in a coordinated effort.

More than 250 people participated on Feb. 3 completing over 1,000 hours of community service. The volunteers worked on campus and at 30 locations in the area including Camp Ernst and ReNewport. Each student is expected to log at least three hours of service on these days.

“It was amazing to see our students rally together like this to start off Homecoming week. Volunteering at different locations allows students to gain a better understanding of the community around them,” said Tiffany Mayse, director of student engagement.

“This event shows the commitment NKU and its students have to making a difference in the lives of others.”

NKU’s Office of Student Engagement has hosted “Service on Saturday” events since 2002. Many of the service days are coordinated with holidays and campus events, like NKU’s Homecoming and Earth Day.

“Students have many reasons to volunteer. Some want to make a difference in their community, and others are looking to become a more well-rounded person. No matter what brought them out to volunteer, everyone leaves feeling more inspired by what we can do together,” said Nick Bliven, AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer coordinator of student engagement.
