New Haven’s staff is focusing professional learning throughout the year in writing and are using several writing resources from Smekens Education. For the past few years, New Haven Elementary School has seen writing as an area of need for professional learning as well as providing consistent instruction from Kindergarten through Fifth grade.

A New Haven Writing Task Force was formed last year and spent the year researching and planning next steps as a school. This team developed a NHES Writing Implementation Guide and some school wide writing norms for teachers to use throughout this school year. One of these norms was to consistently utilize the 6 Traits of Writing language in writing instruction and to recognize these traits throughout the school.

The 6 Traits of Writing and the icons are described below and find more information on them at this website.
