In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Gateway Community & Technical College’s Leadership Enrichment and Development (LEAD) XI class donated food to the Lincoln Grant Scholar House.
Gateway’s LEAD XI class organized and collected monetary donations from Gateway’s faculty and staff. The Gateway Foundation matched those donations to help purchase 1,179 pounds of food and pantry items. The faculty and staff volunteers packed bags of food to feed all 45 residents and 88 children at the Lincoln Grant Scholar House.
“The role of the Gateway Foundation is to support the success of Gateway students through a variety of means including tuition assistance, a student emergency fund, and social supports such as the Food for Thought Pantry,” said Amber Decker, Executive Director of the Gateway Foundation. “This MLK Day of Service project fits in perfectly with the mission of the Foundation to fund activities that help students complete college and go to work.”
Gateway students encompass 62 percent of the residents at Lincoln Grant Scholar House. Lincoln Grant Scholar House provides supportive housing and educational and family services to their residents, who are single parents enrolled full-time at a local college/university.
“We are grateful for our community partners who understand and value the mission of the Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission’s Lincoln Grant Scholar House,” said Shellie Baker, Director of Lincoln Grant Scholar House. “This generous donation will help us to continue to provide a nurturing atmosphere here at Lincoln Grant Scholar House.”
Gateway’s LEAD XI class partnered with the Freestore Foodbank to purchase the donated items.
