The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division in conjunction with its Traffic Division and Traffic Grant personnel have experimented with conducting “traffic blitzes” during late evening/early morning hours on specific roadways in Boone County.
The concentrated enforcement campaigns are geared toward criminal interdiction and apprehending impaired drivers through saturated patrol.
The teams usually consist of approximately 10 deputies and 1 supervisor who take a 4-or-5-hour block and concentrate on a predetermined, specific roadway.
“It’s disheartening, to say to least, when we have to go and report to a family their loved one has died on a roadway as a result of a reckless or impaired driver,” Sheriff Michael A. Helmig said, “ Our accident reconstruction team has been called out 29 times this year for a total of 17 fatalities and 28 injuries. While we have always exercised a zero tolerance on alcohol and drug abuse this effort is my way of upping the ante on those who choose to overindulge and drive anyway.”
So far traffic blitzes have conducted on U.S.-25, U.S.-42, I-75, & I-275 in Boone County. The effort normally yield upwards of 60 to 80 traffic stops accounting for traffic violations, DUI arrests, drug charges, and warrants served.
Traffic blitzes were also scheduled for KY-18 Burlington Pike and KY-237 (North Bend Road) over the just-completed holiday weekend
