Boone County Planning Commission hosts public open house for Plan2040 feedback on January 24

The Boone County Planning Commission will host an open house for residents, employees, and business owners in Boone County on Wednesday, January 24 to seek citizen feedback on how to make Boone County a better place to live, work and play.

The open house will run from 4-7 p.m. and will be held in the newly renovated historic Boone County Courthouse, 2988 Washington St. in Burlington.

The initiative to obtain community feedback is part of “Our Boone County: Plan2040,” which is essentially a blueprint for Boone County’s future. Every five years, Kentucky law requires the Boone County Planning Commission to update the county’s Comprehensive Plan, which establishes the framework to guide public and private decisions about future growth, preservation, land use, and other changes within the county.

“Because Plan2040 is a blueprint for our future, it is important that the citizens and business owners of Boone County let us know their thoughts and ideas on the development and preservation of the county,” said Kevin Costello, executive director of the Boone County Planning Commission.  “What is the vision of the community and what if any changes need to be made to reach that vision by the year 2040.”

“Feedback is the most critical part of creating a future plan that truly represents the community it aims to guide,” Costello said. “Plan2040 provides a snapshot of the Boone County at a certain time as well as creating a guide for going forward.”

To make it easier for residents to share their ideas, thoughts, and concerns, the January 24 event will be an open-house format, which allows citizens to come and go as they please. Guests can stay as long as they want and they will be encouraged to provide feedback and learn more about the specific issues or topics in which they are interested. The primary goal of the open house is not to present specific details but rather to seek out the community’s desires and concerns.

Plan2040 aims to represent each of the different regions of Boone County – urban, suburban, and rural — to take into account the unique characteristics of these areas, and use that information to establish a framework for growth, expansion, and change.

“A Comprehensive Plan is divided into separate chapters or elements, as required by law. However, your feedback does not have to cover all of these areas,” Costello said. “Please feel free to provide any and all feedback — however large or small – about any areas of interest to you.”

“Sharing your thoughts and concerns can impact future plans for transportation, public facilities, natural resources, housing, land use, and much more. This is the public’s chance to have their voices heard and to use that voice to shape the future of Boone County.”

If you are unable to attend the open house, the Planning Commission has created a website at OurBooneCounty.com that is designed to inform and educate residents about this process and to make providing feedback easy. Citizens can provide written feedback on the website if they can’t attend the open house.
