All “A” Classic: Brossart girls falter in second half of 10th Region championship game

Nicholas County outscored Brossart, 27-14, in the second half to come away with a 50-37 win in the championship game of the 10th Region All “A” Classic girls’ basketball tournament on Thursday at Nicholas County.

This is the second consecutive year that Nicholas County has defeated Brossart in the regional final to earn a berth in the small school state tournament. In Thursday’s game, the Blue Jackets outscored the Mustangs, 20-8, at the free throw line to come out on top.

With three freshmen in its seven-player rotation, Brossart got off to a good start and the score was tied, 23-23, at halftime. But the young team faltered in the second half. Nicholas County went on a 14-5 run in the third quarter and scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to open up a 42-28 lead.

The Mustangs’ leading scorer was freshman forward Marie Kiefer with nine points. She was named to the all-tournament team along with Brossart junior guard Olivia Schultz.

Walton-Verona will take on Carroll County in the championship game of the 8th Region All “A” Classic girls’ tournament at 7 p.m. Friday at Walton-Verona.

Semifinals games in the 9th Region boys’ tournament will be played at Newport on Friday. The matchups are  St. Henry vs. Beechwood at 6 p.m. and Newport vs. Holy Cross at 8 p.m. The winners of those two games will advance to the regional final at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Kentucky All “A” Classic state tournament will be played at McBrayer Arena in Richmond. There are eight girls’ first-round games scheduled on Wednesday followed by eight boys’ first-round games on Thursday.
