An apparent road-rage incident at the Pilot Travel Center in Richwood Tuesday has left one man in the hospital and another dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A release from the Boone County Sheriff’s office indicates Ronald Melvin, 44 of Morrow, Ohio, pulled up to the pumps at the truck stop on Richwood Road, shortly after 9:30 a.m. Soon after that, another semi driven by Jeffrey Maggard, 60, of Walton, pulls up nearby.

The police report, based on video evidence and eyewitness accounts, indicates Melvin approached Maggard and a verbal confrontation occurred.

Melvin is then seen running from the vehicle, presumably after being shot by Maggard. Witnesses say after shooting Melvin, Maggard turned the gun on himself.

Melvin was transported to UC Medical Cincinnati and was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm. Maggard died from the self-inflicted wound.

The Boone County Sheriff’s office released this statement regarding the incident:

The Sheriff’s office statement indicates the men were involved in a road rage incident in the lot, but no further information is available at this time.

On Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at approximately 9:38 a.m. a shooting at the Pilot Truck Stop located at 118 Richwood Road in Richwood, Kentucky sent one man to the hospital and left the other deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Truck Stop video shows the victim, driving a semi-truck, pull up to one of a long line of fuel pumps and as he gets out of his truck another semi pulls up slightly ahead of the victim’s truck two spaces down. The victim walks to the front of his truck and then over toward the other truck.  Within seconds the victim runs for cover (supposedly just after being shot).  On-scene witnesses heard words between the two men and then shots rang out.  After shooting the victim, the perpetrator turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.

The victim, now identified as Ronald Melvin Jr., 44 of Morrow, Ohio, was transported to University Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio with a gunshot wound to his arm.  The deceased is identified as Jeffrey Maggard, 60 of Walton.  Initial indicators are that the two were involved in some sort of a road rage incident in the lot.

Angry younger man approaches older man, older man fears for his life, uses gun in self defense.

Drivers need to take a break, excersize to releave stress. Life is too short to get upset. Being wrapped up in a truck all day long is insane. I drive long haul, we have day cabs and they put us in hotels for our 10 hours rest. I can ride a bike, walk and get exsercize to releave stress. It hard to vent when you spend your life in a truck. Please drivers when things get you down, stop, take a break and do something like exercise to releave stress. Old saying goes driving over the road causes Hunger, Anger, Loneliness and Tired…”HALT!!!” PLEASE BE SAFE AND COURTEOUS. Drive defensively your live and the life of others depends on it.

The first commenter doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He wasn’t there, so he just makes some assumptions and presses enter. What really happened was the angry older man made threats to kill the younger man after the younger man told him to knock it off and move on with his life. Then, the old man started shooting.
